Mobile payment is one option, not the entire plan
Official guidance allows eligible overseas cards to be linked to Alipay or Weixin Pay without opening a mainland bank account. Compatibility and verification still depend on the issuer, product and account. Start with the official app and its current prompts. Linking a card successfully is useful, but it does not guarantee every merchant or transaction will use it.
Test the setup before it matters
Install the app before departure where possible, check the phone number on the account and preserve access to banking verification messages. Save your bank’s support contact. If linking fails, ask the issuer or app support about the failure; repeating the same attempt is not a substitute for understanding which check did not pass. At the first ordinary meal or small purchase, check that your chosen method works.
Separate platform charges from bank charges
Read the fee shown at checkout. A platform charge, a bank’s foreign-currency charge and an exchange-rate difference are separate costs. Do not build a budget around a universal claim that all QR payments are free. The Shanghai government’s guidance describes fee conditions and explicitly directs users to current account and payment information. Choose based on what your own screen and card terms say.
Keep an independent backup
Carry another appropriate card or a practical cash plan and store it separately from the main payment device. Before an expensive meal or service, ask which methods are accepted. If a transaction fails, try an accepted alternative and contact the relevant support service. Do not give a stranger your PIN or transfer money to an unrelated personal account as a shortcut. The paid arrival workbook includes a preparation sequence; it cannot guarantee issuer approval or app compatibility.
Keep a practical guide with you.
