Where to stay in China: choose the neighbourhood before the hotel

The accommodation’s relationship to your route usually matters more than a decorative lobby photograph. Start with the places you will return from each evening.

Put the day’s route on the page

Write your two or three main activity areas, the arrival terminal and the departure station. A hotel convenient for one landmark may be inconvenient for everything else. Choose a base that reduces repeated journeys, not necessarily the hotel that looks nearest to the centre on a small map.

Check the actual entrance and luggage route

Ask how close a vehicle can come, whether pedestrian streets affect drop-off and how far the relevant station entrance is. A hotel inside an atmospheric lane can be a good choice when you pack lightly and enjoy the location, but a difficult luggage arrival should be a deliberate trade-off rather than a surprise.

Match the base to the visit

For a Shanghai neighbourhood-and-art trip, access to the districts you will use may matter more than a skyline view. For Dali or Yangshuo, a scenic rural property can add transport and meal arrangements to every day. For an early railway departure, a less atmospheric final-night base can be practical. There is no single best area for every traveller.

Confirm the property, not a rumour

Ask the actual accommodation about check-in identification, dates, late arrival and payment. Official visitor guidance describes passport-based hotel registration; a generic claim that every property handles every arrangement is not useful preparation. Record the full Chinese address and reception contact. Our city guides compare several base areas rather than naming one hotel as a universal recommendation. A custom plan should account for budget, luggage, walking comfort and departure time together.
