What a field dossier adds
Free features begin with a cultural object or place. Member dossiers stay with the subject: primary-source detail, original interpretation, practical route decisions, Chinese place names and questions you can take to a local specialist.
The first dossier is a researched Quanzhou field companion of approximately 2,400 words. It follows reused architectural elements, building phases, tidal engineering and a living performance tradition, then develops a flexible three-day route with a two-day alternative.
One membership, one reading room
China Sideways member dossiers are included in the existing €5/month Odd Index shared membership alongside its other journals. Complete reading and membership verification take place in that reading room. You do not need a second subscription.

A reused stone column and a bridge foundation are not an obvious pair of travel attractions. In Quanzhou, they offer two ways to ask how a maritime city worked. One points towards the movement of objects and religious forms. The other asks how people and goods crossed an estuary. Their connection is more useful than a claim that every attractive old building tells the same story.
This dossier goes beyond a list of stops. It separates what official records establish, what a visitor can inspect and what still needs local explanation. It then proposes three days organised by purpose: religious buildings and their material layers; a bridge shaped by water; and an appointment with living performance. The itinerary is an editorial design, not a report of a tour we have personally taken.
Use it as a field companion rather than a promise of admission. It includes the Chinese names to save, a decision for cutting the route to two days, questions for a guide, and alternatives when weather or a performance changes. Prices, opening hours, access to interiors and live programmes require confirmation for your dates. No private studio, rehearsal or worship space is assumed to be open to visitors.
