A riverfront meal: Da Hu Chun
The Middle Sichuan Road branch at 136 Sichuan Middle Road is a documented pan-fried-bun stop. Use it as one meal anchor around a Bund walk. Begin with an appropriate portion and check the filling. If you also want soup dumplings later, leave a real break rather than ordering both as if each were only a small tasting sample.
The garden-area choice: Nanxiang
Nanxiang’s cited Yuyuan-area address is 87 Yuyuan Road. Choose it when the old-city area is already part of your day. Confirm whether the queue you are joining is for seating or takeaway and what the price covers. The garden’s admission is separate from buying food. A busy queue should not determine the entire afternoon.
A second day: noodles and a pastry
Wei Xiang Zhai at 14 Yandang Road gives the Huaihai-area day a noodle anchor; its documented speciality includes sesame-sauce noodles. Guang Ming Cun at 588 Middle Huaihai Road is an optional fresh-meat-mooncake stop after a walk and a break. Treat the pastry as a small purchase, not another compulsory restaurant meal. Sesame or meat ingredients require direct checking when relevant.
How to use this shortlist
The two area pairings are our route suggestions, not fixed walking times or current opening promises. Search the exact branch and street address before leaving. For a solo visitor, one savoury meal and a modest later snack often make more sense than several large orders. The Shanghai food PDF expands the shortlist with Chinese addresses, first-order questions and meal-budget planning. It is research-based; it is not an anonymous local ranking or a claim of personal tasting.
