Begin with the underside
The underside of a vessel invites a useful kind of attention. A foot, an unglazed area or a mark can reveal decisions that a frontal photograph hides. In a museum, compare the parts you are allowed to see; in a shop, ask before turning an object over. The point is to learn how to look, not to authenticate an antique after a short visit. A collection of phone photographs becomes more informative when every image records one specific question.
The city is part of the object
UNESCO describes Jingdezhen heritage as an interconnected production system, including materials, transport and the organisation of manufacture. That is a stronger travel lens than a list of attractive bowls. A kiln district and a reused factory can tell different stories about how production is distributed. The museum object becomes a starting point for asking who prepared, formed, painted, moved and sold it. The sequence of our route is designed around those questions.
Buy a relationship you can explain
A useful souvenir has a maker or seller you can name and a use you understand. Ask whether the object is for food, display or a workshop exercise; a photograph cannot establish food-contact suitability. Contemporary ceramics do not need a story of secret ancient knowledge to matter. One modest object with a clear provenance can carry more memory than a suitcase of anonymous purchases. Read the municipal destination pages before organising studio access, and use their Chinese names when asking a host for help.
